The eNutrition Academy is pleased to present Learners with a short taster course, introducing the IAEA online learning modules which will provide a greater depth and understanding on the topic.

This course will introduce the learner to the principles of stable isotopes techniques as applied in nutrition assessment and highlight comparative advantages over conventional methods.

This module is suitable for all levels of university training in nutrition and health, and nutrition professionals involved in design and evaluation of interventions targeting all forms of malnutrition.

The eNutrition Academy is proud to support the work of the IAEA to disseminate nutritional science to a wide audience as possible. The following course has been developed and written by NAHRES, a part of the IAEA.

The International Atomic Energy Agency

This course has been developed by the Nutrition and Health-Related Environmental Studies Section (NAHRES) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). It is part of the core mandate of the IAEA to promote the use of atoms for peace and sustainable development, NAHRES supports IAEA's Member States to apply stable isotope technique to address all forms of malnutrition.

NAHRES activities cover six thematic areas, namely, infant and young child feeding; maternal and adolescent nutrition; diet quality; prevention and control of non-communicable diseases; healthy ageing and gut function. Stable isotopes techniques are used as reference methods for assessment of body composition, bone mineral density, human milk intake, total daily energy expenditure, micronutrient bioavailability and vitamin A status.

NAHRES activities complement the work of the United Nations (UN) agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGO's) and interested stakeholders in the field of nutrition and health and align with Sustainable Development Goals 2 and 3

Victor Ochieng Owino BSc., MSc, Phd

Dr Victor Owino is a Nutrition Specialist with the International Atomic Energy Agency where his work focuses on supporting Low and Middle Income countries to apply non-invasive stable isotope techniques to design and evaluate nutrition interventions that target all forms of malnutrition. Some of the topics covered is how body composition assessed using deuterium dilution reflects the link between early malnutrition and risk of obesity and non-communicable disease.

Dr Owino is leading cutting edge research in 9 countries to develop a stable isotope based breath test to diagnose environmental enteric dysfunction, a condition associated with stunting. Dr Owino holds a BSc Food Science and Technology (University of Nairobi, Kenya), MSc Food Science and Technology (Ghent University, Belgium) and PhD in Nutrition (University of London, UK) and currently pursuing a Master of Business Administration in Leadership and Management at York St John’s University/Robert Kennedy College.

He is a Fellow of the Nevin Scrimshaw International Nutrition Foundation. His main contribution to science has been the development and testing the efficacy of novel complementary foods targeting malnutrition in early childhood; he has over 20 publications in peer reviewed journals in this field. He has over 20 years industrial and professional experience, the most recent of which include being the Research and Development Manager with Valid Nutrition, Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of Human Nutrition at the Technical University of Kenya. He was also an instrumental team member in the implementation of the pilot phase of the WASH Benefits Project in Kenya, one of the largest randomised trials to date addressing how improved water and sanitation and combined with novel supplementary foods impact child growth
